Network Rail | Liverpool Station Time Lapse

the challenge

Network Rail required multiple time lapse systems to be installed at Liverpool Lime Street Railway Station to capture their redevelopment work. This work would transform various areas of the station to allow for quicker and more efficient arrivals and departures. This would be done through the replacement of 2000 metres of track and the construction of new platforms. Notably, the redevelopment work would also involve the installation of a modern signalling system and new overhead line equipment. With the project having so many aspects to it, any installed time lapse systems would have to be strategically positioned to capture all the different works occurring. The end goal was to produce a final Liverpool Lime Street Station time lapse film to showcase the redevelopment works as a whole. This film would showcase the redevelopment work to a wider audience.

the approach

We held an initial meeting with Network Rail, where the redevelopment work was discussed in more detail. We also used this initial meeting to gauge what Network Rail required from the final Liverpool Lime Street Station Time Lapse film. Following this, we emailed back and forth with them to clarify key project details.

We then scheduled an initial site survey at the station, to identify key mounting points for our systems. Although some areas of the station were not accessible during our survey visit, Network Rail ensured that we were provided updated photos showing these areas throughout the project. This helped us plan system installations for temporarily inaccessible areas.

Following our first survey, we began to install time lapse systems within the station. Initially, we installed systems which were focused primarily on the station platforms that would be undergoing redevelopment. Upon the commencement of the possession we were able to install more time lapse systems surrounding the station. These were primarily focused on capturing the track replacement portion of the development. We installed our durable time lapse systems across a range of structures/objects, including roofs and columns. This ensured that we were able to capture the project from a diverse range of angles. This would ensure that the final Liverpool Lime Street Station time lapse was dynamic and visually engaging.

THE RESULT

We provided Network Rail with various films during the projects progression. These films showcased different aspects of the redevelopment work as they occurred. Network Rail used these time lapse films to promote the project prior to its completion. Upon the completion of the works, we provided Network Rail with a complete production which showcased all of the redevelopment work carried out.

The final Liverpool Lime Street Station Time Lapse was used for various promotional purposes. The film now also plays on various monitors at the station to entertain waiting commuters. As a member of Network Rail’s Framework for Media and Photography, we look forward to being involved with many more of their projects over 2018.

“It has been fantastic working with the team. Capturing Liverpool Lime Street Station’s major upgrade was no mean feat with cameras positioned in tricky locations, open to different conditions/elements within the station tunnels. Always quick and efficient turnaround from the team to”
