The Challenge
Porterbrook’s Primary Engineer event, held at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre, brought together primary school children, teachers, and real-world engineers for a hands-on STEM education experience. The children designed and built their own model trains, then tested and evaluated them with the guidance of railway engineering professionals.
Our task was to produce a compelling event video that captured the excitement, learning, and innovation on display—highlighting the importance of STEM outreach while showcasing Porterbrook’s commitment to future talent. The video needed to appeal to educators, corporate stakeholders, and wider audiences interested in education and engineering.
The Approach
Inside Out Group provided a dedicated two-person film crew, specialising in corporate video production and event filming. Our filming strategy was carefully designed to document both the structured activities and the spontaneous moments that made the day special.
-
Interview Coverage: We filmed engaging interviews with children as they explained their model train designs and shared their thoughts on working with real engineers. We also interviewed teachers, event organisers, and Porterbrook staff to provide a well-rounded view of the event’s impact.
-
B-Roll Filming: Using a mix of tripod, gimbal, and handheld shots, we captured high-quality b-roll footage of the event. This included close-ups of the model trains, collaborative testing, and interactive discussions between students and engineers. We used a mix of slow motion and standard 25fps to add emotional depth and dynamic pacing to the final film.
-
Storytelling Focus: Our approach prioritised natural storytelling—showcasing authentic reactions, meaningful exchanges, and the educational value of the event. Every scene was shot with the aim of creating an engaging narrative around the day’s activities.
The Result
The completed event film serves as a powerful showcase of Porterbrook’s investment in STEM education and their efforts to inspire future engineers. The final video combines professional visuals with heartfelt commentary, delivering an education outreach video that is both informative and uplifting.
Used across social media, internal presentations, and corporate communications, the film reinforces Porterbrook’s role as a forward-thinking leader in the rail industry—and highlights Inside Out Group’s strength in filming live events, especially within the rail and engineering sectors.
