The Challenge
During Christmas 2024, Colas Rail UK—working within the South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA)—delivered essential track works at Old Oak Common. The five-day blockade formed part of the wider On Network Works programme, designed to strengthen infrastructure resilience and support the future HS2 station development.
The goal was clear: complete critical upgrades while minimising disruption to passengers. Our goal was also clear—create a high-quality video that captured the scope, pace, and importance of the work.
We had just one filming shift, scheduled for Boxing Day. With limited time on site, we had to plan precisely to ensure full coverage of this major infrastructure project.
The Approach
To meet the brief efficiently, we used a compact but powerful filming setup. This allowed us to move fast and film key moments without missing a beat.
Aerial Filming:
We used the DJI Mini 4 Pro drone to capture wide, sweeping shots of the site. These aerial views showed the scale of the rail works and gave context to the layout of Old Oak Common.
Ground-Level B-Roll:
Our camera operator used the Canon R5 mirrorless camera and a variety of lenses to film close-up details. This allowed us to highlight key activities—track installations, plant movement, and on-site operations.
Interview:
We interviewed the Lead Project Manager on-site. Their insights added real value, helping explain the project’s goals, challenges, and progress directly to the audience.
Post-Production:
Back in the studio, we edited the footage into a short, punchy video. We added music, branded graphics, and motion titles to enhance clarity and maintain engagement. This ensured the final film aligned with Colas Rail UK’s communication goals.
The Result
The completed video gives a dynamic overview of the Old Oak Common Christmas rail works. It highlights major upgrades including the installation of switches and crossings, electrification enhancements, and drainage improvements.
Thanks to a mix of aerial footage, cinematic b-roll, and clear storytelling, the video communicates the full impact of the work. It also positions Colas Rail UK and the SRSA as key players in the delivery of HS2 infrastructure.
The final film now supports multiple objectives. It’s being used for marketing, internal briefings, stakeholder updates, and long-term project documentation—a valuable record of another successful step toward high-speed rail delivery in the UK.
